TOHOKU UNIVERSITY Main Library

For Visitor

  • No advance reservation is required to visit the library.
  • Use of the library is limited to viewing, copying, and borrowing materials. Seats may not be used alone.
  • Materials may be borrowed solely for research and reference purposes, provided that such borrowing does not interfere with the use of materials by members of the university community.
    To borrow materials, please obtain a library card.Please refer to the > “Library Card”
  • If you do not have a library card or have an expired card, please fill out a visitor registration form at the front desk before entering the library.
  • We do not accept requests for library card issuance only or for renewal of expiration dates only.
    This procedure must be completed in conjunction with borrowing materials.
  • Access to the electronic resources subscribed to by the university (e-journals, e-books, and databases) is not available.
  • Please use hand sanitization upon entering the facility.
  • Usage procedures will change at the beginning of the academic year and during exam periods. Please refer to “During Peak Season”

Available services

The following services are available to individuals outside Tohoku University.

  • Browsing, borrowing, and returning library materials
  • Searching for library catalog
    The library catalog is available online.
    Materials whose “Location” field in the library catalog search results shows anything other than “LIB-...” may not be available for use.
  • Photocopying library materials
    Please fill out the designated photocopy request form before making copies.
    * Please refrain from copying materials other than library books.
  • Tour (Open Shelf Area)
  • Reference Service
    Please submit reference inquiries via the<Online Reference Request Form>, or by email, fax, or postal mail(letter or postcard).
    To ensure the accuracy of our research, we do not accept inquiries by telephone.
    If it is difficult for you to contact us using the methods described above, please submit your inquiry through your nearest public library.
    Please note that we can only respond to inquiries concerning the following:
     ・Questions about Tohoku University and its academic achievements.
     ・Questions about materials held by Tohoku University Library, including their availability and access.

Library Card

  • If you wish to borrow books, we will issue you a library card. (Shuyukai Lifetime Members are excluded)
    * When viewing or copying library materials, a library card is not required.
  • Library card issuance and renewal procedures are generally handled on weekdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
    If you complete the procedure outside these hours, your library card will be issued at a later date.
  • Please be sure to bring documents that can verify your current address, such as your driver's license or health insurance card.
  • A library card is valid for one year from the date of issuance.
    If you wish to continue using the service after the expiration date, please apply for renewal.

For Shuyukai Lifetime Member

Please obtain your Shuyukai Membership Card (magnetic card) in advance.
For inquiries regarding membership cards, please contact the Alumni Association (Shuyukai).

For Student at the Open University of Japan

When applying for a library card or renewing your library card, be sure to bring your Open University student ID card.

Use of Materials

  • As a general rule, we do not hold materials for users.
  • If you wish to view 10 or more items stored in "LIB-B1-STACKS"or"LIB-B2-STACKS", please notify the Access Services Section in advance.
  • For inquiries regarding materials, please contact the Reference Section.
  • For inquiries regarding the use of classical texts, such as those in the Kano Bunko collection, please contact the Rare Books Section.

Library Tour

No advance reservation is required for individual visitors to the library.
For group or guided tours, please inquire via the form.

Busy season

At the beginning of the academic year and during exam periods, materials may still be borrowed, but restrictions such as limited seating may apply.

Target Period

  • Beginning of the academic year: From April until the end of the Golden Week holidays in May
  • Examination periods: July to early August, December to January

Changes

  • During this period, regardless of whether you have a library card, please fill out a visitor registration form at the reception counter before entering the library.
  • Please wear the name tag provided at the reception desk at all times while inside the library.
  • Seats are unavailable.If you wish to view materials, please ask at the main counter, and we will guide you to a designated seating area.
    *Reading seats are limited.
  • Library tours are not available during peak periods.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) -For Overseas Libraries and ILL Staff

  • To request document photocopyies or interlibrary loans for books held at Tohoku University Main Library, please contact us at the email address below.
  • We do not accept direct requests from individuals.
  • Payment must be made in advance via bank transfer in Japanese Yen (JPY) only.
