Special Exhibitions at Main Library (October-December)
The Main Library will host two special exhibitions from October to December.
One highlights archaeological finds from the Kawauchi Campus,
and the other showcases records of historical disasters in Japan.
We hope you will enjoy discovering new perspectives through these displays.
1. We were here : Tracing the Archaeological Sites Beneath the Kawauchi Campus
The “Kawauchi Campus” of Tohoku University, where students carry out their daily lives, is a site rich in history. During the Edo period, it was home to the Ninomaru (second compound) of Sendai Castle and samurai residences; in the Meiji period, it housed the Japanese Army’s Second Division; and after World War II, it served as a U.S. military camp.
The Tohoku University Archaeological Research Office has conducted excavations at 34 locations across the campus. The unearthed artifacts are tangible traces of the people—our predecessors—who once lived here, offering glimpses into their daily lives.
During the two-month exhibition period, approximately 170 carefully selected artifacts, mainly from the Edo period, will be on display. Please explore the history uncovered beneath the campus grounds.

2. Mediating Disaster Memories : Connecting Past Records with Present Lives
As part of the Tohoku University Integrated Knowledge Digital Archive Project, we will hold a special exhibition and lecture this year as well.
This year’s theme is "Mediating Disaster Memories," featuring various materials held by our university — geological materials, literary documents, postcards, and more.
Information on past disasters is not just something that helps us understand events that happened long ago.
The insights gained from deciphering them provide us with a deeper understanding of disasters and ideas for future disaster prevention.
